Lamb of God // Live in Richmond, VA // Album Review

10

Having basted onto the scene 20 years ago with New American Gospel, Lamb of God have repeatedly released crushing albums one after another and June 2020 saw the release of their eighth studio album self-titled Lamb of God. This album was the first without Chris Adler on the drums and featured Art Cruz, who filled in for Adler on the Slayer farewell tour.

When the Covid Pandemic hit, Lamb of God did not waste any time promoting the album and took the decision to do two live stream events in September 2020, with the one stream featuring the playing of the new album in full and then playing four tracks as an encore including ‘Ruin’, ‘Contractor’, ‘512’ and the debut live appearance of ‘The Death of Us’ which was recorded in quarantine for the Bill & Ted Face The Music Movie.

Selecting a 550 capacity venue named The Broadberry, the intimate location is about to be shaken to the foundations. As Lamb of God begin the intro to the album ‘Momento Mori’ and the deep voice of Randy arrives for that narration we have all heard on numerous occasions from the album, I challenge anyone not to get the chills.

As the anticipation builds and waits for that “Wake Up” you twitch before exploding into life and just losing control. This is what live music is all about, the energy and passion are that only this band can create. As you listen you can imagine Randy storming around the stage, wrapping the mic lead around his wrist and giving absolutely everything as the band are totally engrossed in giving their all.

As the songs that have been keeping my neighbours entertained continue to get that special live treatment, I just close my eyes and imagine that I am at that gig and wishing time away to seeing the band at London’s Brixton Academy in December.

The quality of the recording is top drawer and whilst this is not your average live recording, it is clear that the live experience still excites Lamb of God and they can produce incredible performances even when there is no crowd to feed off.

There is no higher proof of the quality of a band than when they take a stunning album and can recreate it perfectly, in fact, better on stage and Lamb of God do this every time they hit the stage, even when there is no crowd.

Put anything breakable away as you are about to lose your shit when you hear this. An utterly devastating live album that solidifies the band’s place as the most important metal band.
