Kyros – ‘Dive’
August 14th is ‘Covers Night’ for London-based synth-rock outfit KYROS, who are nearing the final dates of their extensive virtual tour. The band also welcome the release of the digipak CD (complete with 12 page lyric booklet) of their latest studio album, ‘Celexa Dreams’.
The CD and vinyl versions are available to purchase and pre-order respectively via Kyros’ merch store and the White Star Records website, as well as being available in all good online and physical stores, including Amazon and HMV.
This month’s virtual gig is a covers special featuring a whole host of reputable guests, including John Mitchell, guitarist of Frost* and Lonely Robot and co-owner of the band’s record label, White Star Records, Ray Hearne of Haken, and Andy Robison of IHLO. The band are going live on their Facebook Page at 8pm GMT/ 3pm ET on 14th August as they play through tracks by Haken, Frost*, Imogen Heap, Genesis and Rush.
On their upcoming stream, Kyros drummer Robin Johnson comments:
“Some of these songs are quite within our comfort zone, as in they already sound a bit like the kind of material we might write…others are more unexpected choices. We had a blast bouncing ideas around when we were putting this set together and I hope through this we’re able to connect with people who might not have heard us before!”
On July 21st, the world was met with the sad news of the passing of Cardiacs frontman Tim Smith, at the age of 59. In a fitting tribute to the late artist, Kyros recently released a cover version of the Cardiacs track ‘Dive’.
On his introduction to Cardiacs during his time at The BRIT School, Kyros vocalist Adam Warne recalls:
“One of my teachers, Chris McInnes, introduced me to them knowing that I was into checking out all sorts of weird and wonderful progressive music. He showed me the absolute insanity that is their song, ‘Tarred and Feathered’. I recall the sensation of my jaw dropping to the ground in disbelief over what magic I was hearing; The bombastic energy of punk fused with the creativity and technical nature of prog, plus a whole load of additional magic thrown in.
Once I got home, I went straight down the rabbit hole of finding more Cardiacs music to listen to. I just had to find more to satiate this musical appetite for a style of writing that I had never heard before. It was like seeing a new colour for the first time.”
Adam’s enthusiasm for Cardiacs spread even to his bandmates, as guitarist Joey Frevola recalls a long drive from Nashville to Fort Lauderdale:
“Adam decided to show me pretty much the entire discography of Cardiacs – frankly it was life changing.
I don’t think I had ever related as strongly to another composer’s musical tastes so deeply and completely. I remember specifically getting to this track, ‘Dive’ off the ‘A Little Man and a House and the Whole World Window’album and thinking “How is this dude in my actual brain?” It felt like every twist and turn might as well have been my own decision, because it’s exactly what I would have done anyway. It was freaky.”
They’re a bizarre bunch, and Tim Smith is a one of a kind composer. His music will forever live on. Rest easy, Tim.”
Bright, colourful and brimming with nostalgic influence, ‘Celexa Dreams’ is available to stream and purchase digitally via this link, with physical copies now available to purchase (CD) and pre-order (vinyl) via Kyros’ merch store, the White Star Recordswebsiteand in all good online and physical stores, including Amazon and HMV.
