K.Flay // Inside Voices // EP Review

Twice Grammy-nominated, K.Flay brings us a new 5 track EP following the success of her third album, Solutions, back in 2019. The alt-rapper takes a new route with this EP which is less pop and more heavy with some big collaborations. Inside Voices still holds that heavily influenced electro sound fused with rap and shows the artists new growth.

The first big collaboration brings us pop-punk legend Travis Barker on “Dating My Dad”. The track has a super catchy beat and melodic chorus while keeping those fast-paced lyrics. It’s a drastic difference from “TGIF” which features Tom Morello. This track is instantly much darker and heavier compared to the other 4 tracks on the EP. Featuring heavy synth and fast rap before heading into slow and heavy sections, it’s definitely a big change but still a great track. The first track on the EP is very reminiscent of artists such as Elle King on its opening verse however features that fast rap K.Flay is an expert in. The chorus does take a less bubblegum sound and takes a heavier sound however it is a clear gem on the EP.

While only being 5 tracks, K.Flay makes her point with Inside Voices. There is a clear sense of relatable angst and frustrations blended into catchy songs that are easy sing-along hits. With this new direction, it will certainly be interesting to see what else is to come from this genre-bending artist.
