Toronto trio jackie have released their beautifully crafted ‘Hey Angel’ EP today. They’ve also revealed a music video for new track ‘Love To Give’, a track that almost didn’t make the record, as singer and guitarist Jackie Mohr explains: “I originally loathed this song, and wanted nothing to do with it (ha). It felt like some obscure Sheryl Crow song from the late 90’s/early 2000’s. But as time went on it kept surfacing. Mostly because our producer (Willows) couldn’t let it go, but then our manager (Adam) started to really dig into it as well. I would have to revisit my conflict with it. Don’t get me wrong, Sheryl Crow’s a badass, but it definitely wasn’t a reference I was chasing after. Once I came around to the idea of this song being a ‘thing’ I knew I was going to have to re-write every lyric of it. And of course being me, I put it off until the very last moment. That moment was the last day of the studio… everyone was waiting on me to sing the vocals for it (it was the last thing to record on the whole EP), but I knew we needed better lyrics in place. Lyrically speaking, the song was all over the place. So instead we all sat in a dark , quiet control room bouncing lyric ideas off of one another. My goal was for those who had already heard the song and liked it not to even notice anything was changed haha. The only lyric kept from the original demo was, “… love to give”. When my manager (Adam) later heard the studio version of the song he said he hadn’t noticed the lyric change, so I knew we did a good job not screwing with the energy of this tune by changing the lyrics.”
The band’s line-up is completed by Max Trefler on drums and Marc Girardin on guitar. Inspired by the most classic of songwriters, the band expertly craft music which would happily lie alongside Courtney Barnett, Sharon Van Etten and Bruce Springsteen in a playlist. And what a playlist that would be. jackie’s debut EP ‘New At Drugs’ was released in 2020 and the band have racked up almost a million streams on Spotify since then. ‘Unspun’ from the EP also made it into the Top 40 at Canadian Radio.
