Ho99o9 // Skin // Album Review

10

I was a fan of Ho99o9 and their unique style from as soon as I heard them. Then I saw them support Frank Carter and the Rattlesnakes at the Alexandra Palace and the energy that slapped me through the wall pushed them even higher in my regards.

Having played the debut album United States Of Horror repeatedly along with Dead Bodies In The Lake and Cyber Warfare, for me this is one of my most highly anticipated albums of 2022.

My excitement was increased when I heard ‘BATTERY NOT INCLUDED’ and now I get to hear the rest of the album.

On Skin theOGM and Yeti Bones have worked heavily with Travis Barker along with Bun B on, Saul Williams and Corey Taylor to continue the range of diverse influences and styles that fans of Ho99o9 will be used to by now.

If you are unaware of Ho99o9 then please don’t expect to be able to pigeon hole them into a nice genre box, you have no fucking chance!

The most prominent styles would be Hip-Hop, Punk and Hardcore but then throw in some electronics and distortion and you still won’t comprehend how obscure the band are.

So how does Skin match up to expectations? Fuck me, this is brilliant.

From opening track ‘NUGE SNIGHT’ with its Hip Hop style and shuddering bass before the Drum n Bass style to the aforementioned ‘BATTERY NOT INCLUDED’ that also smashes around into Metal with breakdown style riffs.

We all know Corey Taylor and what he brings to the party and he unleashes the more aggressive side of his vocal range on ‘BITE MY FACE’ as this blends Metal with Electronica and Hip Hop. It works amazingly well and is another nod toward the working partnership between Ho99o9 and the Slipknot brand having been announced on the Knotfest Roadshow alongside Cypress Hill.

I could go through each track and say how amazing it is, but that would get a little boring, so here’s the short version. Each track explores its own sound, pace and aggression level, but each offering has an incredible  rawness and vulnerability that we can all relate to.

For me Ho99o9 are the band to watch. Some people will wonder what the fuck they are listening to, but I would ask that you press play with an open mind and get ready to explore what you may not have experienced before but will want to experience repeatedly

The way that Skin goes where it wants and doesn’t fit with traditional styles is testament to the band as they are who they are and create what feels right and helps them to express themselves.

If you are looking for something to broaden your horizons, look no further. If you are a fan of Ho99o9 then Skin is going to satisfy every itch you have.

Simply stunning.

Ed Ford
