Heads For The Dead // Into The Red // Album Review
Supergroup HEADS FOR THE DEAD are back with their second stab at horror induced classic death metal. With some titans within the death metal scene at the helm, you wouldn’t aspect anything but filthy riffs, punishing drums & terrifying vocals. And I’m very pleased to say they tick all the boxes!
Featuring Jonny Pettersson (Wombbath, Gods Forsaken, Henry Kane) writing Guitars, Bass, Keys, FX you can tell this album has a lot of passion & dedicated time to crafting these songs & choosing the best musicians to help give this album the filth it deserves.
Jonny Pettersson was able to wrangle heavyweights such as Ed Warbie (ex-Gorefest, ex-Hail of Bullets) on Drums & Ralf Hauber (Revel In Flesh) manning the Vocals & lyrical concepts, and both bring what is needed to the album.
Not only are the riffs on this album monstrous but the drums are one of the highlights of this second record! While I enjoyed HEADS FOR THE DEADS first offering in “Serpent’s Curse” for me the production was a little inconsistent for me. This may be because it was a passion project & the first offering from the band, the songwriting was solid and very memorable but the drums & vocals were a little lost in the mix to me.
But I’m so happy to hear this time around with “Into The Red” the production has given what I felt the band deserved.
The album packs such a punch, the guitar tone is furious (having that old school HM2 style but not a carbon copy), the drums are some of the tightest blastings I’ve heard in a classic death metal album for a while! & the vocals have some the best range.
Ralf Hauber’s vocals can go from the deepest growls to the highest ear-piercing screams seamlessly & it works so well.
“Night Ripping Terror” & “Horror Injection” are the standout songs for me.
His vocals give the album such a diverse feel, where this could be just a run of the mill classic death metal album style for me I get very blackened/black metal vibes.
The likes of Belphegor & Inquisition come to mind. this isn’t a black metal record but any means but the vocals give the album such a wide range & i feel will appeal not only to death metal fans but also fans of blackened death metal / heavy black metal.
The album as a whole span 46 min and it flew by, the riffs are very memorable & after a few listens I was already humming the hooks & vocals patterns, this album is defiantly one that will stay in your head for a while & will give you cravings to re-listen.
I’m very pleased that HEADS FOR THE DEAD were able to improve from what I felt held them back in “Serpent’s Curse” & carve there own path with “Into The Red”.
“Into The Red” is a must-have & pleasant surprise for any Classic Death Metal fan or any Black Metal fan who likes there sound with a hint of filthy DM riffs.
