NORDIC UNION Animalistic
This collaboration between Danish rock singer Ronnie Atkins (Pretty Maids) and prolific Swedish songwriter and producer Erik Martensson (Eclipse, W.E.T.) began in 2015 and ‘Animalistic’ is the third album of melodic hard rock by the duo. As with its predecessors (‘Nordic Union’ and ‘Second Coming’), it is a high quality set of superbly written songs, faultless musicianship and top notch production (by Martensson) and a masterclass by Atkins in deftly utilising his voice.

SUNSTORM Brothers In Arms
The second Sunstorm album to feature Ronnie Romero (Rainbow, Lords of Black, The Ferrymen) as lead singer also sees guitarist Luca Princiotta (Doro, Blaze) join the now established line-up of Romero, bassist Nik Mazzucconi, drummer Michele Sanna and keyboardist Alessandro Del Vecchio. Songwriter and producer Del Vecchio had made a deliberate decision with 2021’s ‘Afterlife’ to reposition Sunstorm closer to the melodic AOR sound of their early records, with Romero’s powerful vocal style being an ideal fit. Musically, this new offering has elements of the more melodic side of Rainbow and Deep Purple mixed with the sound of Foreigner and classic Melodic Rock.

RESTLESS SPIRITS Second To None
The second album by the melodic/AOR project masterminded by Lords Of Black guitarist Tony Hernando highlights not only his own skills, but also showcases three exciting new-ish singers in Kent Hilli (Perfect Plan, GIANT), Chez Kane and Renan Zonta (Electric Mob, Skills), as well as respected scene veteran Johnny Gioeli (Hardline, Axel Rudi Pell). Hernando’s eponymous 2019 debut as Restless Spirits had also seen him step away from the full-on metal style associated with Lords Of Black to collaborate with renowned singers that also included Gioeli and Hilli.

HYDRA Point Break
This new Swedish act is the brainchild of Stockholm-based songwriter/musician Henrik Hedström and also features his close friend Daniel Flores (First Signal, Find Me, The Murder Of My Sweet) on drums and keyboards. Vocals and lead/rhythm guitar is by Andi Kravljaca (Aeon Zen, Seventh Wonder), bass/fretless bass by Jonny Trobro (Find Me, First Signal), with Hedström himself on keyboards and acoustic/clean guitars. Starting out as a pop songwriter, Hedström had initially collaborated with Flores in 2007 before hooking up again a decade later for songs recorded by First Signal and Angelica and released via Frontiers.

VANDEN PLAS Live & Immortal
Recorded on 30th December 2016 in their hometown of Kaiserslautern, this live album by the German prog metal masters is a special addition to their discography as, aside from the ‘The Seraphic Live Works’ (which documented their set at Progpower USA in 2011), it is the band’s first complete show to also be released on long-form video. It sees the quintet delivering a powerful, energetic performance to an enthusiastic crowd, with the bulk of the setlist based on their two ‘Chronicles Of The Immortals’ albums from 2013 and 2014 plus several fan favourites.
