Earthless // Night Parade Of One Hundred Demons // Album Review

Night Parade Of One Hundred Demons or Hyakki Yagyō in ancient Japanese legend relates to a horde of demons, ghosts and ghouls that descend on the sleeping village each year. One interpretation of the legend goes that anyone who witnesses this event will die instantly and be carried off into the night. Therefore, those who reside in the village take refuge in their homes to avoid this possibility.

Whereas the 2018 release Black Heaven featured shorter tracks and vocals, Night Parade Of One Hundred Demons is made up of three tracks, totalling 62 minutes of instrumental wonder. The opening two tracks are actually part 1 and part of the same song which also happens to be the album title. These two behemoths alone take up 41 minutes together.

So, how do the three-piece from San Diego, California, make these tracks engaging throughout?

The concept that these tracks could grab you and keep you for so long especially with no lyrics is one that’s hard to comprehend, but as soon as you press play, you feel like something special is happening and draws you in a special way.

Combining atmospherics with top-level instrumentals, you can’t help but be totally spellbound by what is happening through your speakers.

With nowhere to hide and baring everything, Earthless mix-up tempos and tones to provide so many different angles, you are taken on a wild and unpredictable ride. Never quite sure which direction you are heading next, at what speed, or what’s around the corner, you are on the edge of your seat without even realising it. You get drawn in by the steadier atmospherics and allow yourself to let your guard down and when you are at your most vulnerable, something happens.

Like a psychological thriller, Night Parade Of One Hundred Demons will have you unnerved and the subtle art of drawing you into that false sense of security and Earthless have mastered that. The storytelling really does happen musically and not only that, but the detail is immense and the depth is huge.

Night Parade Of One Hundred Demons may feel daunting if you look at the tracks and their lengths, but do not avoid this and allow yourself to be completely immersed in this pool, you will be blown away.
