Dubbed as the “Heaviest Split Of Year” CDN records are setting their stall out early and releasing this limited edition 7” split featuring two heavyweight bands both from Ontario, Canada, with one thing in mind, to blow folks heads off.
The split features three tracks with the first band up being The Blood Of Christ, and they have bought us two delights to follow up the 2018 release of Unrelenting Declivity Of Anguish.
Firstly ‘The Extinction Syndicate’ which clocks in at around 2minutes 20 and opens with some feedback and atmospheric electronic before exploding into a Death Grind sounds which relentless drums, powerfully chugging riffs, along with an exploratory technical guitar keeping the sounds constantly changing. The vocal is guttural and strong and this is a short sharp welcome to this band if you have never heard from them before.
The second track up is ‘Murdering A Storyteller’ which long term fans may recognise from the bands third album, however here it is rerecorded. Immediately the heaviness smashes you in the face, as this brutal example of Death Metal shows no mercy and the intense drums, choppy guitars and the deep growling vocal to add the final piece of the dark and unrelenting puzzle. This track weighs in at 3 minutes 20 seconds and allows the band to display some Black Metal tendencies with crashing sounds and notes along side the heavy as fuck Death Metal. As the echo of the final drum beat fades, we get prepared for side B.
On the other side we have one track from Deformatory, titled ‘Myiasis’ and weighs in at a sturdy 5 minutes 42. This track is a stopgap from the band to tide everyone over until the forthcoming 3rd album, which is slated for release late 2019.
The sounds of flies, and a sample around evil greet up, before a technical and incredibly brutal assault begins. The blast beats, tones created by the guitars, and aggressive vocal lead a complete and utter battering on the brain, and there is so much going on this track that it become that intense it borders on overwhelming at times. The guitar solo leads to a slight let up before the onslaught continues. If this is how the new album to sound, it is going to be incredible and this track is bound to increase anticipation exponentially.
The speed and technicality of this track is extremely impressive and clearly set the standard of quality for other bands, which will be cause for concern for some.
The combination of different styles of bands on the split works nicely as you can fully enjoy each band on their own merit and you know which band is playing which song. It certainly whets the appetite for more from both bands.
