Dance Gavin Dance // Afterburner // Album Review

Dance Gavin Dance has dropped their ninth full-length studio album today Afterburner and as always it is yet another beauty to sit alongside an already accomplished back catalog. Their Prog-laden Rock infused Metalcore mash-up is an infectious blend of everything that is good about DGD. As always the album is a cacophony of beautifully balanced melodic beauties and gnarly riffle and angst-laden vocals intertwined with the soft intimate and delicate moments that only DGD can do so well.

The albums opening track ‘Prisoner’ is a perfect example of this as it pushes and pulls at you with its rollercoaster rhythmic changes and peaks and valleys that just demand your attention. ‘Lyrics Lie’ with its interchanging harmonizing vocal work and guttural screams provides the gnarly and dirty riffle that you need to let out all that self-isolation bullshit that everyone is suffering from. ‘Three Wishes’ the band’s current single/video was a collaboration between the band and their fans with over 1500 video submissions to create an innovative and unique video and is an upbeat number that will have you dancing your ass off in no time. The album is constantly packed with intricate musicianship that bends and twists the mind as to how such compositions are created, fluid, and perfectly paced each track flows so effortlessly that you barely realize the time passing as you lose yourself in its fine songwriting.

With a plethora of albums behind them, side projects, and years and miles on the road grafting and honing their craft, you can hear that all translated to Afterburner and the quality within. DGD has become a force to be reckoned with within their genre and has built up an army of dedicated fans who will embrace Afterburner with open arms and no-doubt recruit a whole new wave of fans in droves too. Easy on the hear whilst giving you that gnarly edge needed to keep the energy levels up and make you wanna rock the fuck out, DGD has done it again.

About Dance Gavin Dance:
Rejecting tired formulas at every step, Dance Gavin Dance merge progressive rock and post-hardcore with thick groove, brilliantly combining experimental music with hooks and a warped sense of humor. 2018’s Artificial Selection crashed into the Billboard 200 Chartat No.13, on the strength of the love for fan-favorite predecessors like Acceptance Speech (2013), Instant Gratification (2015), and Mothership(2016), and just as importantly, the band’s mesmerizing and unforgettable live performances. Artificial Selection went on to sell over 112k copies and counting. In the U.S. alone, the group has amassed over 800 million streams, with 1 million album-equivalent units sold across their catalog. With hundreds of thousands of rabid fans engaged with DGD on socials, it all amounts to a full-force band facing a mainstream that has overlooked them for too long.

In the heady tradition of Frank Zappa and Nirvana – people who made serious art without ever seeming self-serious – DGD is a band that does what they want, how they want, confident that the audience will keep up.
