Cryptosis started life in 2013 as a three-piece thrash band, Distillator. With roots firmly entrenched in thrash, they have added a few strings to their bow with elements of black, death and atmospheric metal. An eerie opening in the form of instrumental “Overture 2149” gives you a glimpse of what is to come. “
Decypher” carries that foreboding feeling at the start of the song before exploding into a fury of drums and blistering riffs while Houvast roars his way through the track before unleashing a ripper solo, a brilliant track. “Death Technology” keeps pace with the previous track with drums at full tilt, riff-heavy and bass that thumps along nicely, Houvast shreds big time on the solo while he spits out the vocals with venom. “Prospect Of Immortality” is a slower, heavier, airing on the side of black/death metal, track with a kicking bass, as the track moves forward you can hear the change in their sound as the synth plays a major role and the song becomes more atmospheric, the riffs and solo are firmly rooted in thrash which gives a great blend of the genre. “Transcendence” is a full-on thrash fest, the drums are at breakneck speed and with riffs so sharp they’ll tear you a new one while Houvast snarls and spit his way through the track.
“Perpetual Motion” is an instrumental interlude with a futuristic vibe. “Conjuring The Egoist” blasts you right from the off with a pummeling drum beat and killer riffs while Houvast’s menacing vocals hold you spellbound, a classic song. “Game Of Souls” rips right from the off, a heavy bass line drives the track with a machine gun drum beat and savage riffs, throw in a cool solo and you have one hell of a track. “Mindscape” is as atmospheric as it gets, with its hushed tone vocals at the start and no your ears don’t deceive you that is a mellotron, the track is slower and heavier than previous ones and the use of the synths add to the prog/atmospheric feel, a brilliant song.
“Flu Divergence” closes the album at a million miles an hour, Hauvast pays homage to Tom Araya with his opening salvo as he screams his way into the track aided magnificently but a pounding drum beat, frantic riffs and massive bass line, the pace is relentless from start to finish as they tear through the track, a really impressive finish.
“Bionic Swarm” is out 26/03 Via Century Media Records and if you were a fan of Distillator then you will not want to miss this.
