Boasting such talent as Jim Tasikas on guitar alongside George Kollias doing double duty on the drums and vocal, Ed Paulsen on Bass and Brian Mason on lead guitar, Contrarian bring us their latest slab of Old School Death Metal with solid roots on the 90’s Progressive Death Metal arena however with their special seasoning to create a hybrid of Old School, New School and Progressive Death Metal. The subgenre elitists are going to hate this!!
The technicality on display along with the outrageous quality is evident from the off as the scintiling guitar work chops and changes from rifftastic to hook central and then circling to searing solos as the drums relentlessly pummel and beat providing a punishing and unforgiving audible experience and then the vocal tops off this delight perfectly with the gravelly and brutal sound provided from behind the drumkit.
The pace and tone venture into the progressive seamlessly at times as before you know it you are whisked away in the trance provided by this Death Metal beast, to a place full of glorious horrors and sadistic sounds as the melodies are intertwined with brutal and blunt slabs of solid Death.
This release just oozes class and bravery to venture off the well beaten path, letting the mood and music take them where they want and seeing what the result is, which quite simply is outstanding and very exciting. It feels like the band have simply unshackled themselves and let their inner beasts out to mutate and create this 38 minute stunner.
‘Exorcism’ and ‘Among The Misled’ showcase the full range of musical genres that Contrarian blend together in their magical ways and really are tracks to get truly immersed in, before ‘Whomsoever Worships the Whiteworm’ is an 8 minutes masterpiece of musical composition and a complete song that will blow the minds of Prog Metal fans, Old School Death Metal fans, New School Death Metal fans and general Metalheads. It is a belter.
The 7 tracks on display on this release simply have to be heard as they are genuine standard setters from now on. This album has so many layers it has been on constant repeat for some time now and will be for the foreseeable future. Simply stunning.
