Candlemass // Green Valley Live // Album Review

With over 35 years of experience under the band’s belt, Candlemass have done it all.

With masterpieces Epicus Doomicus Metallicus from 1986 and Nightfall from 1987 forming part of the incredible discography, the Doomsters followed in the footsteps of Black Sabbath however are still creating incredible genre-defining music.

Following on from the 2018 release The Door To Doom, which saw for the first time since the 1986 debut of Candlemass, singer Johan Langquist returned, with his theatrical vocal style making the 12th full length by the Doom masters a classic, now the band have used the forgotten the year of 2000 to make a live album.

Green Valley Life features the band’s lockdown session, which happened to be their only show of the year and also their debut streamed show and with a line up consisting of Johan Längqvist (vocals), Mats Björkman (guitar), Lars Johansson (guitar), Leif Edling (bass) & Jan Lindh (drums), it is safe yo expect something special.

Featuring classic tracks ‘Well of Souls’, ‘Mirror Mirror’ and ‘Betwitched’ from the blistering first four albums, along with ‘Astorolus’ from The Door To Doom, there are no end of options for such a stunning band to include on this release.

Opening with the stunning ‘Well of Souls’ the Doom just washes over you with low down filthy riffs and a deep bass that is joined by blunt drums and a soaring vocal, this is simply the best of the genre that you will hear.

Continuing the journey through this methodical and down-tuned doom masterclass, this is like a live greatest hits release and really sounds incredible. It is clear to see how the band have been at the forefront of the genre and are the bar for doomy metal.

There is no filler on this release, it is a non-stop class and will either make you relive the moment you first heard these tracks or make you wonder why you have never experienced Candlemass before. If you are in the latter category, don’t be too ashamed of yourself, just be pleased that you have now tuned into the best in the Doom business.

Green Valley Live is the album that everyone needs after such a shit year and thank you to Candlemass for releasing this stunning collection of live tracks. Hopefully, we will get to see them played in person soon, but for now, this will more than do.
