|Brightr, a.k.a. Laurie Cottingham, the UK’s long-serving purveyor of gloomy emo-pop is returning with a new 6 track EP to be released on April 5th through No Reason Records (UK/EU), Penultimate Records (Australia/Asia Pacific) and Lockjaw Records (UK Distro).
Two Sides is the follow up to 2016’s well-received debut album Year One. Brightr chose to work with producer/engineer Matt O’Grady (You Me At Six, Deaf Havana, Don Broco) again, following the success of their collaboration on the first album. Though sadder and more stripped back than its older sibling, the six tracks on offer here illustrate a cathartic purge for this singer songwriter.
“I’ve been writing Two Sides pretty much since I completed Year One, but it’s been a lengthy work in progress,” said Laurie about the current release. “I think it took time because this is very much a purging record for me. Realising I’ve forgotten how to feel, how to actually release my emotions over the years, which is not at all healthy.
“I found myself in a place after Year One where I was happy again, with everything around me, truly happy, but under the surface all of the memories and past experiences were like a virus eating away at me. I began writing, but even though I was happy with the music side of things, the words felt forced, which is something I never wanted for Brightr. I decided to just write down these painful thoughts and feelings, lay it all bare for this record and take my own advice.”
While there might not be a straight answer to the themes of growing up, relationships and memories, there’s certainly an audible ablution found to the ear when listening to Two Sides. Brightr’s intricate guitar playing weaved amongst well crafted songwriting is this release’s candle in the dark.
“All in all, it’s made for my saddest collection of songs to date, but a record that feels like a solution, a cure and a signal of new beginning, whilst being the end of that chapter of pain,” explains Laurie.
Laurie also mirrors his creative ethos to the stage. “I often encourage people to just be themselves, especially when I’m talking onstage.” If you’ve seen Brightr live, you’ll know that this, combined with his strong ethic, means that audiences will be treated to some captivating performances.
Brightr has announced various live dates across Europe this summer, including upcoming festivals and Italian and Irish tours. Brightr has previously played alongside the likes of The Front Bottoms, The Menzingers, Lemuria, Prawn, Apologies I Have None, Listener and Jonah Matranga, as well as performing at festivals including Manchester Punk Festival, Dot To Dot, Washed Out and The Fest (US) several times. Brightr has embarked on a hectic touring schedule across the UK, Europe and US, over past three years in support of his first album; so expect more of the same.
