Ask Carol – Norwegian – Alt-Pop-Rock Act Introduce Themselves To Rock ‘N’ Load

So for anyone unfamiliar with yourself, tell us a little bit about your backstory and how you ended up here.

We, Ask and Carol, the two members of Ask Carol, became friends right after high school, when studying music in southern Norway. We were always talking about starting a band, but it would take about 7 years before we finally went through with the idea. The summer of 2015 we stayed at a cabin in the Norwegian mountains, with no electricity and no water, far away from people and civilization, only a few sheep outside the windows. That’s where our first songs were made, and where the seed to what would become Ask Carol started. One more year went by before we started for real, and Ask Carol was officially born, in 2016. Our first concert ever was at a small blues club in Seoul, South Korea, called Strange Fruit. At that point, Carol was already a somewhat known guitarist-for-hire in the Oslo music scene, and had never ever sung in front of people before, or at all for that matter. That’s why we wanted to try out our music and hold our first concerts far away from our hometown.

After thinking hard and long about the band name, with many pretty good suggestions, we ended up with the simple band name Ask Carol, the first names of our two members, Ask and Carol, put together. Ask is a real Norwegian name, coming from Norse Mythology, the Viking religion; Ask was the first human being, created by the God Odin, out of a piece of Ash-wood. You can read all about that story here: Ask_and_Embla
Our music has a grungy, alt-pop rock vibe with a lot of guitars and female pop/ rock vocals. The vocals can be soft then suddenly turn mean, fierce and badass. Usually we sound a little more rough live than on the records, with more of our rock influences shining through live. We like so much different music, and different genres, and we believe by blending them we can create something a little bit new.

Being only two, playing almost all instruments live on stage, our live-style is multitasking, with both of us often playing two instruments at a time, maybe even

The last single we released is a catchy disco- punk, alt-pop tune with a retro vibe. Intimate vocals and grungy guitars setting the mood, with a dreamy background and pulsating beat. Could probably make you think of bands like Yeah Yeah Yeahs, KOLARS, or maybe Faces On TV.

What’s Happening Now: Tell us about what you are currently up to.

The current times are, as you know, very weird and challenging for everyone. For us artists and musicians this crisis means there are no concerts, no traveling, and, if it were not for the fact that we were quarantined together, we couldn’t even have practiced.

Luckily we were in the same place at the time of the first lockdown in Norway, therefore we have been so lucky to have the opportunity to work on our music. We have used this last month to record and release a new single, called «Run With You», and make our first real music video. Due to the lockdown we made everything ourselves, from directing, to editing, producing and all. The only thing is Carol’s sister who had an acting role as one of the girls in the video.

We live in a very isolated place, a small town with only around 100 people, far from the nearest city. The internet here is kinda bad, so online concerts are not an option for us sadly. But we love working on videos, so we try to upload stuff regularly.

Now we’re also working on new songs, and we’re planning to release even more single quite soon! Meanwhile, «Run With You» is available on all services where you stream music 🙂

What is next for you?

This summer, as all the festivals and gigs got cancelled, we’ll focus on creating new music and creating videos. We love learning new stuff, so we use every available moment on something Ask Carol related.

Our debut album is scheduled for release in early 2021, and we’ll be working on that too.

We have a few concert coming up this Fall, which we are keeping an eye on. Hopefully those will happen. We’re also constantly watching the situation and developments, and when it starts to make sense we’ll get started on the booking and get some more gigs going again! Originally we planned on doing a US and UK tour after this Summer, but that will be postponed to some time in early 2021 too.

 Influences & Inspiration

For this section can any band members give me an example of an artist’s track that influenced or inspired them to chase a career in music.

Ask: There has been many records that has meant a lot to me, but think one record that has been extra important is London Calling by The Clash. I loved it when I was a teenager (still do btw), and used to listen to it all the time. It was some time after listening to The Clash a few years and reading their biography that inspired me to get into music in the beginning.

Carol: Lauryn Hill in Sister Act 2, the movie with Whoopi Goldberg. I was just a kid, but that was the most beautiful singing I had ever heard. I dreamt about singing ever since I saw that movie.
