Fasten your seatbelts as the San Diego four piece have come together to release the first new work since 2012 and the seventh album in their discography. Having been without vocalist Tim Lambesis whilst he was in prison and whilst he is a certified Addiction Treatment Counsellor, it would appear that As I lay Dying is another tool in the kit to promote appositive lifestyle, one which is fully supported by the other band members.

Maybe therefore the album title is so apt as the band look to make up on time lost and reclaim the ground lost, using the time in a constructive way and now this can be expressed through the music they make. Having used the time to reflect musically individually and as a unit each member now feels that they are the best version of themselves and are ready to prove it.  Whilst the reason for those lost years is well documented and not to be condoned, the fact that the band as individuals and a collective have used the time constructively and appear to be supportive of each other has led to them creating a fantastic return to the world and one that they should be proud of.

‘Blinded’ is the first track that riffs into action and is met by blistering drums and then the aggressive vocal screams across the track. The guitars are technical and precise as we head into a clean chorus on the vocals but the music is so powerful it grabs you immediately. It is clear that this is album is here to make a statement and what a way to start.

‘Shaped By Fire’ continues the charge as the guitars rage in the background, the vocals are powerful and emotional, as the pace is being pushed and the feeling that this is a special track to the band is clear as they combine the aggression and the cleaner vocals, showing how well the two styles can blend and complement each other.

This combination takes centre stage throughout the 12 tracks and there is an undeniable felling that this record in not just a return to the fore, read the song titles and you cant help but feel that the story behind them all lies in the lost 6 years.

Shaped By Fire as an album is musically incredible, both aggressive and beautiful and vocally it is a perfect example of combining of styles, allowing us to rage along or sing along to the often anthemic chorus’ that are the centre piece of some of the songs. As I Lay Dying are back and they have just made a massive step in reclaiming their place in the musical world.
