Forming in 1993 in Helsinki as an instrumental band, Apocalyptica has never stopped evolving and pushing boundaries of modern heavy music. Now they return with their 9th studio album and has wandered into the vocal areas of music, Cell-O now sees the quartet return to their roots as they delve deeper in the instrumental realm than ever before.

As the title suggests the main focus instrument is the Cello and this album is the opportunity to explore and test the versatility of this instrument, whilst still creating ‘heavy music’ that talks to the listener, not just being heavy for the sake of it.

As soon as the first strings are heard in a moody and deep tone, the scene is set, before the crashing drums make you aware that is not a ‘classical album’ and then the electrics kick in. By now you should be prepared for something that many will not have experienced before, and we have not even begun to experience the ‘Thrashier’ side of the stringed instrument. Yes, you read that right, Thrashy Cello.

The veteran band have been able to take music and make it so you don’t miss the lyrics as the notes whisk you away on an enchanted journey, full of twists and turns along with pace changes that make this record extremely exciting to listen to and wonder how this sound has been created by using what is generally a ‘non-heavy’ instrument.

What this four-piece can do with 3 Cellos and a set of drums is nothing short of remarkable and needs to truly be heard to be appreciated.

Just the title track alone takes on you such an adventure through its near 10 minutes, that you feel like you have experienced an entire magical tale, full of energy and power as we delve in the furthest reaches of what is achievable with these incredible instruments in the hands of these wonderful musicians and their incredible minds.

The 9 track album connects with every possible emotion and will transfix your mind as you are captivated by the gloriously powerful and beautiful sounds of the Cello and transported to the most incredible musical world, one that you will never have experienced before and will want to return to immediately to try and explore parts of it that escaped you the previous visit.
