Lightscape – Interview – Rock ‘N’ Load 07/12/2017 7 We recently reviewed their killer EP Circles and loved it here at Rock ‘N’ Load, so we thought it was time to chat to these crazy kids about all things LIGHTSCAPE. 1.) I first wanted to take the time and thank you for doing this interview with me today. For our readers who haven’t heard of you yet, can you tell us about yourself and anything about the band you’d want us to know? Who have been your major influences in your writing style? Hey! No worries! We’re a 5 piece Alt Rock band from Norwich, been active for nearly 2 years now. And have achieved loads of awesome things so far! We’ve all been in bands before when growing up, but this is the project where all 5 members are on the same page and are going to give it our all! We have a big sound, and don’t necessarily want to be limited by the usual genre boundaries. I think on the surface its quite a Big rock sound, but given time to sink in, there is so much more within the melodies, synthesizers, lyrics, guitar riffs and thus lending to a bigger pallet of which our sound can explore. I don’t think any of us are interested in making music for a specific audience, we just make what comes out naturally. We all come from very different musical backgrounds and influences, ranging from Muse to Bon Jovi, or Jimmy Eat World to Faithless. 2.) Let’s talk about what you currently have going on. You have a new album and UK Tour coming up – How are you guys feeling with that on the horizon? We’re really excited!, its took a while to develop what we think Lightscape should sound like, we’re really proud of what we have achieved and we’re itching to show the world! We hit the road on Thursday, heading to places in the UK we haven’t ever been before. We love nothing more than playing live and we treat it more as a show as opposed to a gig. We have our own lighting rig that we made our selves this is programmed to our set. We love using little interludes and changing songs up for a unique performance of the songs too! 3.) For those unfamiliar with your music, If you were to say one song of your own perfectly sums up what you are all about which song would that be? Some people have compared us to Hands Like Houses, which is a good ball park I guess (they’re an amazing band) I don’t think there is a specific song that I can think of, which I hope is a good thing haha. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5NSIf7F7uMQ This is a really cool song by them called ‘Colourblind’ 4.) When you write any new music, can you tell us what the process is like? Describe to us what happens in a typical writing session. The writing process has always been a long one for us. More often than not, it’ll start out as a chorus or riff idea on logic from one of us. This then leads to several nights of 3 of us bouncing ideas around until we get something we’re happy with. As we’ve wrote more songs, I feel like were getting better and more consistent with unique hooks and interesting parts but never detrimenting the song. 5.) With the music industry always changing and evolving, what are the things you like and don’t like about it? What aspects of the industry do you feel have hurt or helped your career? If you could change anything about it, what would it be? It’s now very difficult to become ‘a signed band’. labels are less willing to take a punt on an up and coming band and invest in them. Fortunately, that doesn’t mean you can’t be a ‘successful’ band. now we’re in an era of online streaming and the Internet is playing a massive part of that. We have listeners from all over the world contributing to our Spotify plays. most are American, we’ve also had a few videos go almost viral in Asia. Without things like YouTube and Spotify we couldnt have done any of that, no label could get you that organic exposure. There’s an awful lot of venues closing throughout the country, which is partly due to people not going to shows. I think we need to look after what we have left and go out and support local music more. I guess it’s like a relationship, if like you only attend to it when it suits you, chances are it won’t last long. 6.) Can you guys pinpoint any particular event or moment in your career when you can say THAT was the moment where things started to click for you guys? We got an opportunity to play in Austria a couple of months back for Harley Davidson, we supported Blackstone Cherry, the stage was massive, there were 25000 on site, and there was a fridge full of desperados. Probably our favourite experience as people as well as the bands so far. 7.) Do you or any of your band members have any side projects? If so, what are they? There’s no time for anything else! Haha 8.) What has been your most memorable gig to date? Either Austria or Our last Hometown show in June, we played a big banking hall with all of our local fans in. In the least egotistical way possible, I feel like our sound belongs in a big room, it creates the right atmosphere. 9.) How do you decide which songs go into a set when you perform live? Do you change up the sets or stick to a regular set list? Do you have any covers? We’ve got to the point now where we’re struggling to choose our 6 song set for support shows. Sometimes we leave it till last minute to try and gauge how the crowd will react to certain songs, other times we just go all out and welcome the reaction. We performed a version of Dua Lipa’s ‘Be the one’ a couple of times. It went down really well, was a much heavier version, but with a clean vocal still. We do tend to steer away from covers where we can though, that’s not why we started this band 😀 10.) If you had a choice to go on any bands tour, which tour would you pick and why? Probably Bring Me The Horizon or Enter Shikari. Both bands are playing huge venues across the world, they have massive stage productions. We make a big a deal about our live gigs being a show as opposed to just live music. And the bands above hit that nail on the head. 11.) Do you have any advice for any upcoming artists? What’s the best piece of advice someone gave you when you realized you wanted to be a musician? Keep plugging away, find like minded people, enjoy every moment. Don’t be disheartened by negative experiences, there’s nearly always a positive to take. 12.) If you could have written any song by any other artist what song would that be? Justin Timberlake – Like I love you. Who doesn’t love JT, the groove in that tune is so sick! 13.) What does the year ahead hold for you guys? As I write this, we are nearly in Cambridge for the first date of our tour. We’re doing a few dates with Maven around southern England off to London tomorrow, Worthing Saturday and Norwich on the 17th! 14.) Any last words?
