Having just dropped their latest offering I’ll Take What I Want, Rock ‘N’ Load knew it was time to talk all things Buster & Shuffle – Jet gave us the lowdown.
I first wanted to take the time and thank you for doing this interview with Rock ‘N’ Load today. For our readers who haven’t heard of you yet, can you tell us about yourself and anything about the band you’d want us to know?
We are London piano bashing 4 piece band Buster Shuffle. We play Ska infused rock n roll with a slice of punk to boot.
Who inspired you crazy kids to pick up your respective instruments and enter this business we call show?
The Clash, The Specials, Chuck Berry, Ian Dury and the Blockheads and Fats Domino.
Let’s talk about what you currently have going on. You’ve just dropped a new album – When you write any new music, can you tell us what the process is like? Describe to us what happens in a typical writing session.
Its on going for us. We write all the time, on the road, in between tours, on holiday at home it’s a constant. Then we sit down and pool all the ideas together and decide what we like and don’t like and what we are gong work on. Once we’ve worked up some new ideas we hit the studio and try and knock it out quickly haha….. no seriously in two days we recorded all the instrumentation for this album. No messing about.
What kind of subject matters has inspired the music on the album?
British politics, lies, banana theft in Belgium, Peckham, doing things off of your own back. Everyday things you know…..
What about the recording process / studio etc / is that part of the process something you guys enjoy?
Yea its great as we mentioned its something we’ve done fast this time round. The recording was two days for instruments. I week for vocals and two days to mix. The writing took two years though so that’s where you cant rush it, not if you want decent output.
If you were to say one song of your own perfectly sums up what you are all about which song would that be?
“ill be in Peckham’ has all the elements of Buster Shuffle that we dig – https://open.spotify.com/
What route have you guys taken thus far to build up your fan base?
Hard work and lots if gigs. That’s it keep hitting the road and having very understanding partners. Some bands don’t have to do that and it comes easy but for us its hard graft.
Do you feel there is enough support / opportunities locally for bands like yourself to get exposure?
Yea if you use social media and stuff it helps. Local radio can be cool too its stuff we’ve done allot of.
With the music industry always changing and evolving, what are the things you like and don’t like about it? What aspects of the industry do you feel have hurt or helped your career? If you could change anything about it, what would it be?
I guess if we could change anything it would be to get more money from streaming to the artist. That revenue stream is there but its not the same as selling records.
What’s your take on the current music scene in the UK specifically?
Hard but its there. Fantastic festivals like Rebellion help and there are some other great smaller festivals jotted around the country we play as well I would say support for local gigs can be hard from town to town but people do love a good festival so that seems to be going strong.
Do you have any advice for any upcoming artists? What’s the best piece of advice someone gave you when you realized you wanted to be a musician?
Get a European passport, or its gonna be a lot harder for you to travel and break though like we did
What’s coming up in the near future for Buster Shuffle?
Lots and lots of touring. UK, Europe, USA and more! So see ya at a gig soon! Oi!
