Modena’s Pop-Punk Crew Why Everyone Left are set to release EP ‘This Is Not A Test’, via Penultimate Records on 2ndNovember. For the EP, the band wasdetermined to be very hands-on, with Enzo producing and recording all bar the drums himself and Seb Barlow (Neck Deep, WSTR, As It Is) at Celestial Productions handling mixing duties. The resultant 5-tracker sees the band declaring: “I think we finally found our way with this EP. The previous ones were too heterogeneous, this time there’s a connection from start to finish.”Taking influence from the likes of State Champs, Four Year Strong and A Day To Remember, ‘This Is Not A Test’ sounds like long summers spent drinking with your friends, delivering big, bouncy riffs and infectious vocal hooks. Continuing their trend of DIY-ing it, the quartet recently released the self-directed video single ‘Bouch’, which can be seen it here. Here is Enzo to tell us more about it…

“Bouch is the first track we wrote for the new EP. We actually think it may be our best song ever, not saying our favorite, but that one song you want people to remember you for. That’s what we thought as soon as we wrote it in late 2016 and it’s still what we think, so there was no doubt it would have been the first single off ‘This Is Not A Test’.

I’ve been listening to a lot of different music in these last years and that helped me a lot to have new and fresh inputs on the new songs. You can hear the hip-hop/pop influence in the second verse with that beat and in the whole song being more ‘minimal’ than what we are used to.

The same process happened with the video, I was pretty sick of the usual ‘band playing and nothing else’ kind of performance video, so I wanted to make it look like a hip hop one, with badass street shots, lots of energy and stuff like that. Plus, I always loved the scribbles on the Justin Bieber lyric video for ‘What Do You Mean?’; our good friend and animator Luca Zecchi made an awesome job adding that. He also did our EP artwork.

It’s been a pretty long shooting process, we had three different shooting sessions over a three-month period, between Milan and Modena (our hometown). Milan is a such a beautiful city, with so many great locations, you can’t find public areas like those in Modena.

I always directed all the WEL videos, it’s never been about me being a video maker, so trying to save money not hiring another one, I just have a clear vision of what I’m looking for and it wouldn’t be the same if someone else would do it. That’s the same reason why I record the band’s music myself. This has probably been the hardest video to direct since I had no reference videos, so it’s been a little harder to let the other bandmatestrust me, but they did and as a result, this is definitelyour best video!”
