San Diego’s psychedelic stoner-rock trio Earthless have released their third live album which was recorded at the Great American Music Hall in San Francisco, just a stones throw away from the release of their latest studio album Black Heaven.

After the success of Live at Roadburn, From the West covers a large chunk of tracks from the Black Heaven album and hurls its listeners back in time to relive one of the bands unique and transcending live sets.

With only 7 tracks ranging from the curt lightening strike of Volt Rush to a cover of Led Zepplin’s ‘Communication Breakdown’, Earthless have created a mix of tracks to satisfy a concoction of potential fans.

Cheers from the crowd start the ball rolling as the band open up with Black Heaven; an instrumental track lasting in excess of 10 minutes which is backed up by flawless guitar solos, punchy bass and lean drumming – a perfect yet dominant intro to the album.

Electric Flame and Gifted by The Wind are the only bands lyrical tracks on the album and Mitchell blends in well with his smoky vocals and wah wah overload.  Let’s not forget Rubalcaba beating those skins senseless whilst Eginton on bass soars over those frets with his fingers to knock out some serious psychedelic basslines.

Some unheard tracks also feature on the album, one of these being Ulura Rock; a track that’s a mind-blowing 19 minutes long and those who know Earthless would even be shocked at this gargantuan beast of an instrumental that sees Mitchell at his finest, keeping the listener captivated and intrigued the entire time.  What could quite easily be used as a film soundtrack, this track is one big and heavy ‘stoner rock fest’ that corroborates the fact that Earthless have the power.

Once the album has reached it’s peak it’s time to slow it down with Acid Crusher; the final track that is busting with thick fuzzy bass lines and analogue repeat-echo guitar effects that give the listener that stoner twist. A fitting end to the album.

The live mix of the album is second to none and puts its listener back in the picture and Earthless’ incredible energy is manifested in each and every track.

For those psychedelic hip-shaking dudes out there with time to burn, this album is one for the collection.
