In early 2008 Alestorm released their debut Captain Morgan’s Revenge, an album of epic choruses and rum drinking pirates ruling the high seas. Founded in 2004 and formerly known as Battleheart, these Scottish lads haven’t deviated far from their blend of Folk Power Metal and raging Punk.

October 2016 saw vocalist Christopher Bowes announce live on stage that Alestorm would be releasing a new adventure to whet the appetite of all would-be pirates out there. Fans will be hoping that the band’s latest release repeats the formula of the past, inspiring the imagination and childish dreams of grog drinking bar brawls and sailing to far off lands in the hope of finding treasure hiding under a big black ‘X’ on a torn old map.

No Grave But The Sea opens like a cannon firing on a Spanish brig, immediately transporting you back to the 17th century. Hard and grainy vocals capture the essence of a bygone age filled with murder and debauchery. Add in the chirpy keyboards and tight guitar riffs, and what you have is a recipe fit to crack open a beer and dress like Blackbeard.

The whole album plays out like a Monty Python parody, and this becomes more apparent in the track ‘Fucked with an Anchor.’ A definite crowd pleaser and a song which will surely feature in their latest tour, this jaunty song will have fans and non-fans alike raising their tankards and gleefully singing along in their best pirate voices.

Through all the comedy and silliness there is some serious music to be had here. ‘Treasure Island’ is an eight-minute Power Metal epic complete with a heavy guitar riff and operatic chorus, as you’d expect. The keyboards are dizzying and could cut through glass, and are perfectly worked into a classic thrash guitar riff that would have any self-respecting metalhead driving himself into a frenzy.

Alestorm have somehow taken a slice of the pirate age and expertly crafted it with the age of modern Metal. This is an album not only for those already signed up to the Alestorm pirate express, but for anyone who wants to crack open the rum and have a party. If you were hoping for a serious pirate story then this album may not be for you, but if you have had a tough day at the office, grab your tankard of rum and “Yo ho ho” until your heart is content!
