We’re here tonight in Dublin for RavenEye’s return to Irish shores, first up The Grand Social Club Dublin with support from UK Rockers SKAM and local heroes WOLFF kicking off proceedings with some Trashy Blues.
Rock ‘N’ Load was fortunate to be covering RavenEye’s World Tour Of Ireland this weekend and with a full review of their Belfast show to come, we’re here to get an update on all things WOLFF.
A mid week gig sets the scene and as I arrive at the venue, the ever bustling streets of Dublin just draw you in. It’s always busy with people pushing their way across the crowed walkways, The Grand Social is set back off Dublin’s Halfpenny Bridge area and blends into its surroundings so much so you’d hardly know it’s a music venue at all.
Tonight though we’re in for a treat, a few years on from my first introduction to WOLFF whilst supporting The Cadillac Three on their Irish leg of their tour late 2016, on that fateful evening he performed solo, Guitar, amp and kick-drum and a loop pedal from memory, tonight would set a his band set-up, a tight three piece outfit on their home soil.
The lights dim as the lads hit the stage and by dim I mean go off, the lighting guy clearly has a sense of humour as the guys rip into their set, with just two lights swirling occasionally landing on the artists on stage. So much so I actually gave up taking photographs it was so poor. But that didn’t detract from the quality of the music the boys were laying down up front. Huge sounding numbers with a dirty gritty feel, mesh perfectly with the intimate environment of the loft in the Grand Social.
A short but sweet set allows the guys to lay down the foundation for the night ahead and sets the bar high, after taking in a few songs I draw comparisons with the likes of Tyler Bryant & The Shakedown. Bold guitar laden riff’s steeped in Bluesy goodness but with huge sing along choruses that makes you wanna get down and dirty.
Songs like Flesh Blood Skin and Bone and Freak Like Me just are contagious live, they have a life of their own and as WOLFF himself would say they breathe new life every time they’re played. These loose and colourful musicians just slay their set have the audience eating out of their hands by the time their all too short set draws to a close.
A first class band with so much potential, if you get the opportunity to check them out do it! The guys will be on the road again soon so check them out on social media, like & follow for all the up to date information – you will not be disappointed.
