Blues rocker Steve Hill holds more talent than first meets the eye. Standing up playing the guitar and singing simultaneously whilst playing the bass drum, snare drum and hi-hats with his feet, with a cleverly placed drum stick fused to the top of his guitar used to sound any other percussive instrument within reach, Steve Hill truly is the epitome of a one-man band.
He is the 2015 Juno Award winner for Blues Album of the Year and he is also the 2016 Maple Blues Award winner for Electric Act of the Year, Guitarist of the Year and Entertainer of the Year. This leaves no doubt that Steve Hill has certainly been well received by the industry, and his talents are truly appreciated by all those who come across him.
The brand-new album Solo Recordings: Volume 3 is due for release on October 6th on No Label Records, and to support the release Steve Hill will be supporting Wishbone Ash on a 27-date tour throughout October.
Solo Recordings: Volume 3 opens with ‘Damned,’ a bluesy track that has a cool ’60s Stones feel about it and makes for a great entrance to the album. The third track, ‘Still a Fool & a Rollin Stone,’ opens with a fast blues guitar solo and makes way for a chilled out, rhythmic vocal section which slows the pace. This is followed by ‘Slowly Slipping Away,’ which opens with a harmonica and has a country feel about it accompanied with an acoustic guitar. ‘Smoking Hot Machine’ has the rhythm of Little Walter, and ‘Emily’ has a modern southern rock sound to it.
Steve Hill also gives his take on the very old, yet classic blues track ‘Rollin & Tumblin’ which dates back to the old jug bands. He gives it a beautiful vintage feel whereby it is crackly and not finely polished, really homing back to the roots of the song. The album draws to a close with ‘Walking Grave,’ a much grittier and fuzzier track that features more meat on its bones. The album is full of blues influences from all over the past 100 years, and there is certainly something for everyone who loves the genre.
Solo Recordings: Volume 3 is released on Hill’s independent No Label Records Friday October 6th.
