Dark Manoeuvres

Album Review

Birmingham has always produced some of the greatest rock and roll music, from Black Sabbath to Judas Priest, and Devilfire are the latest addition to the list. Forming just last year, the band is ready to release their debut album Dark Manoeuvres on October 6th. The 13-track album was produced by Romesh Dodangoda (Motorhead, Bring Me the Horizon, Bullet for My Valentine) and co-produced by Romesh and Devilfire frontman Alex Cooper (Shy, Quireboys, Spike, Ginger) at Long Wave Studios in Cardiff.

Although only forming in 2016, Cooper has been writing this album for the past 4 years. About the album he says, “Dark Manouevres is very much an inside look at my life over the last four years…the good times and bad on the UK rock ’n’ roll scene. Love, loss, hate, jealousy, arguments, all thrown against a background of excessive drink, drugs, and ego fuelled behaviour. Though not to blow these things out of proportion, it isn’t like the day of Motley Crue in the 1980s. These things are very subtly done nowadays, hence the album title.”

‘Waiting for A Rockstar’ is the latest release off of the album and what a track this is. The lyrics sound as though Cooper is speaking about a girl, however he has revealed that this is in fact a metaphor for the music industry and how cold it can be if you don’t get your head around it. The lyrics are backed by heavy guitars and melodic riffs that will get you tapping and singing along. Check out the video here:

The album is full of heavy riffs and foot stomping beats that give you that real sense of hard melodic Rock. From start to finish it is full of hits that show that this is a band who will go far.

Each track has its own backstory, from the girls that refuse to settle to and those who are a whirlwind. Cooper puts his heart into his songs and lays it out for the world to see. But it’s not all about love songs but other emotions as well. ‘God Give Me Vengeance’ and ‘(You Gotta) Revolution’ are perfect examples of this, as they hold more complex meanings about looking deeper into your life and what’s happening around us all. All of this is set against catchy riffs and beats that hold true melody that show the talent of this up and coming band.

Devilfire have toured with former Nightwish singer Tarja Turunen, as well as playing the sold out Hard Rock Hell AOR and HRH Sleaze. With more dates yet to be announced, grab their album on October 6th.
